PRP’s Role in Healing Vulvovaginal Autoimmune Conditions

  • By Dr. Marisol A. Moon

Over the past few years, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has become widely known for its impressive ability to stimulate accelerated healing in the body. It is commonly used to rejuvenate the skin, trigger renewed hair growth, and alleviate musculoskeletal injuries, but a recent study suggests that PRP can also be used to resolve autoimmune conditions like Lichen sclerosus (LS).

An Introduction to Lichen Sclerosus

LS is an autoimmune condition that causes thin patches of white skin to form in genital areas. This condition is significantly more common in women, especially after menopause. LS begins as small white spots on the skin that grow into bigger patches. Those patches of skin eventually become thin, wrinkled, and scarred. Aside from the appearance of the skin, itching, discomfort, bleeding, and blisters are common symptoms of LS.

The Impacts of LS

Since LS frequently causes skin on the vulva to scar, it can cause urination difficulties and pain during sex. Serious complications include loss of the labia minora, sealing of the clitoral hood, and even burying of the clitoris. These problems can have physical, emotional, and psychological impacts on women due to the pain and embarrassment that affects their quality of life and impacts their intimate relationships.

Exploring PRP As An Innovative LS Treatment

Without any type of comprehensive treatment for women with LS, medical solutions have always been focused on controlling symptoms. In past years, LS has been treated with strong cortisone creams that alleviate itching, but do not help to heal scar tissue or prevent future breakouts. These corticosteroids are also inconvenient because they require continuous administration and sometimes even make signs of atrophy more dramatic.

PRP, a type of plasma obtained from a patient’s own blood that contains a wealth of potent growth factors, nutrients, minerals, and monocytes, has become widely used for tissue regeneration, reconstructive operations, and surgery in past years. This inspired a recent study into the potential of PRP to replace topical steroids for patients with LS.

The study included 28 women between 22 and 88 years old. All women were diagnosed with LS, but remained unresponsive to topical steroid treatment. Researchers obtained PRP for each patient and injected it into any areas affected by LS, including the labia majora, labia minora, clitoris, and clitoral hood. In total, all patients received three PRP treatments spread four to six weeks apart, then a final treatment at 12 months.

PRP Proves Valuable in Treating LS

Overall, all patients in the study experienced improvement in the size of their LS lesions, and for eight patients the lesions disappeared entirely! Furthermore, half of the participants became free of symptoms after the full span of PRP treatments, and 82 percent of patients stopped using steroids altogether. These dramatic results indicate that PRP has the potential to serve as an effective therapy for LS.

NuMoon Regenerative Medicine leads the Jacksonville, Florida area in treatments that utilize PRP to promote healing of injured and diseased tissues. Thanks to Dr. Moon’s determination to remain on the forefront of the future of medicine, patients can trust NuMoon Regenerative Medicine to use PRP to treat difficult and painful conditions like LS. Call (904) 580-6777 to make your first appointment with Dr. Moon, and prepare to be liberated from the pain, embarrassment, and frustration of living with chronic LS.

Many people who suffer from knee pain are looking for alternative less harmful treatments in hopes to avoid the endless cycle of steroid injections and surgeries like total knee replacement. Although steroid injections can help reduce pain, it does nothing to improve the joint or ligament quality and over time can further impose joint degradation leading to more pain and eventual knee surgery. Now, there are several natural treatments offered at NuMoon Regenerative Medicine to help your knee feel stronger and have less pain

Prolotherapy and Perineural Injection therapy are two regenerative medicine techniques that have helped reduce knee pain and improve function without the use of steroids or surgery. To learn more about prolotherapy and perineural therapy click here.  We also utilize PRP (Platelet-rich Plasma) which comes from your own blood and placed back into the injured/painful area which jump starts an inflammatory cascade signaling growth factors and your own stem cells to promote healing for those with more severe cases. The healing process can take up to 6-12 weeks and we recommend at least 2-3 sessions per affected joint spaced 4-6 weeks apart. PRP works well for mild to moderate osteoarthritis and can improve pain and function while hopefully reducing the need for joint replacement.

Prolotherapy, Perineural therapy and PRP is also used to improve pain in other joints of the body. We also utilize PRP to improve wrinkles and scars (Vampire Facelift/Facial), restore hair loss in both men and women, improve breast cleavage line and stretch marks (Vampire Breast Lift). PRP can also improve women's stress incontinence and enhance sexual function (O-Shot) and treat Erectile Dysfunction (P-Shot).

Here is an article from Arthritis Health that talks more about PRP and knee pain. Click here to read the article.

If you have a question about PRP or would like to know if you may be a candidate for PRP for knee pain or other regenerative treatments, we offer in office consultations as well as virtual visits to discuss your specific needs. You can schedule directly from our website by clicking here  or you can call us at 904-580-6777 for more information.

Chronic pain is a very difficult issue for not just the patient but for physicians. With the current state of Pain Medicine and the shift towards less medications and steroid use, what alternatives do patients have? Not much, if your physician only does steroid injections or pain medications.  Many patients are searching for other ways to treat pain and let's face it...medicine is always evolving as it should be! Luckily, I have found other alternative and holistic treatments that are SAFE and EFFECTIVE and have been used for over 15-20 years to successfully address all types of pain. I have been lucky enough to have treated numerous patients with success in my clinic and am sharing this more with those who feel they have exhausted all options.  This specialized treatment, called Perineural Injection Therapy (PIT), can address chronic soft tissue pain, joint pain, as well as  nerve/neuropathic type pain.

What is Perineural Injection Therapy?

Perineural Injection Therapy (PIT) is a specialized injection treatment that was developed by Dr. John Lyftogt of New Zealand. Unresolving pain can be due to an injured and non-healing sensory nerve that causes inflammation and delay of healing that can manifest and tight muscles, painful joints and soft tissue pain.

The treatment consists of a series of small injections targeting the painful and sensitive nerves with natural substances. NO STEROIDS or ANESTHETIC is used! Using a form of dextrose solution allows the treatment to help extinguish pain that is often felt immediately even with the first treatment. Repeat treatments are needed however pain is usually steadily reduced over the course of treatments allowing for return of function.

The average number of treatments required for most conditions varies however many notice significant decline in pain (most with over 80% relief) over the course of 3-5 treatments with the results long lasting depending on the condition.

Treatments are completely safe with rare complications. No allergic reactions have been observed!

How does it work?
When sensory nerves are injured they can cause nerve pain or neuralgias commonly felt as chronic pain. The thought process for Perineural Injection Therapy (PIT) and the working theory behind its success is that sensory nerves are thought to be effected by glucose and when these glucose levels are low, which can be caused by injury or insult to the nerve, then pain can be felt. If the normal balance is not restored to the sensory nerve, then pain persists. With PIT, perineural glucose levels are restored,  neurogenic inflammation is reduced allowing for sensation of pain to be eliminated...and when your pain is gone, you can get back to living!!

Perineural Therapy along with other Regenerative Orthopedics (Platelet Rich Plasma - PRP) is a holistic and nonsurgical approach that delivers a purposeful and controlled treatment injections to help stimulate the healing cascade in our bodies resulting in reduced pain and better stability!

When you are suffering from painful or even debilitating Achilles tendinitis pain, you shouldn’t have to suffer through the traditional “rest, ice, NSAIDs, stretch” routine for months just hoping for relief. At NuMoon Regenerative Medicine in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, Dr. Moon offers prolotherapy as a treatment that actually stabilizes the affected area and provides ongoing pain relief and tendon strength.

What Is Prolotherapy?

Prolotherapy is a popular alternative treatment used to alleviate chronic ligament and tendon weakness. It involves injecting a proliferant solution directly into the injured tissue. The solution most often consists of dextrose mixed with the anesthetic lidocaine. It is injected around the Achilles tendon to purposefully cause an inflammatory response. The body will interpret the inflammation from prolotherapy as a new acute injury, leading it to stimulate its own immune response to produce collagen and cartilage that can heal the injury.

Why Is Prolotherapy Better Than Steroid Injections?

Prolotherapy is a truly unique treatment because it actually restores and strengthens the Achilles tendon by stimulating the production of healthier tissues. This is very different from the effects of steroid injections such as Cortisone. Though steroid injections can temporarily alleviate pain, they do not address the underlying causes of Achilles tendinitis. Instead, steroid injections actually weaken tissue and interfere with the body’s natural healing processes. As a result, steroid injections have been found to lead to further degradation of the tendon tissues and even worsen pain over time.

What Should I Expect From Prolotherapy?

Like all medical treatments, you will enjoy the most benefits from prolotherapy when you receive your treatment from a qualified, experienced, and highly trained professional like Dr.  Moon. Prolotherapy involves injecting a solution into multiple areas along the Achilles tendon. These injections just feel like pinches to the skin and are easily tolerated, though a local anesthetic can be used if needed.

The best results are achieved with four to eight total treatments spaced every four to six weeks. This treatment plan ensures that the body’s inflammatory and healing processes can work to strengthen tissue over a long period of time. You can expect your pain to gradually decrease after each treatment until your tendon has returned to its healthy and uninjured state. Most patients at NuMoon Regenerative Medicine report partial or significant pain relief after just one to two treatments, and most patients only require maintenance treatments a few times a year if pain recurs.

Unlike conventional treatment methods for Achilles tendinitis, prolotherapy makes it possible to alleviate your pain, strengthen your tendon, and liberate you from the regular use of ice and medications to escape your chronic pain. Call (904) 580-6777  now to make an appointment at NuMoon Regenerative Medicine and resolve your tendinitis once and for all!

If you’ve ever experienced pain in the space above your heel and below your calf, then you have experienced stress on your Achilles tendon. The Achilles tendon is actually the largest in the body, and it connects your calf muscle to your heel bone. Since it is used as you run, jump, and walk, it is prone to overuse and degeneration. It is very common for that overuse and degeneration to trigger the inflammation that causes Achilles tendinitis.

Types of Achilles Tendinitis And Their Symptoms

Noninsertional Achilles tendinitis most commonly impacts younger, active people in the middle portion of the tendon. Fibers in that area of the tendon break down and develop tiny tears that cause visible swelling. Insertional Achilles tendinitis, on the other hand, can affect active and inactive patients alike. It involves the lower portion of the heel where the tendon attaches to the heel bone.

Pain and stiffness along the Achilles tendon, especially in the morning and after physical activity, are hallmarks of Achilles tendinitis. Severe pain the day after exercising, thickening of the tendon, bone spurs, and chronic swelling may also indicate tendinitis. This issue does not develop from a single injury, but rather from repetitive stress to the tendon. A sudden increase in the amount and intensity of physical activity and tight calf muscles at the beginning of an aggressive workout can both accelerate the development of Achilles tendinitis.

What Are Traditional Achilles Tendinitis Treatments?

Like other medical conditions, Achilles tendinitis can be approached for treatment in many different ways. Conventional treatments have been used for many years but aren’t always effective. The most common conventional treatment includes resting the tendon by avoiding high-impact exercises, icing the most painful areas of the Achilles tendon throughout the day, taking NSAIDs like ibuprofen and naproxen to reduce pain and swelling, and performing specific stretches to strengthen the calf muscles.

While these steps can be valuable for minor cases of Achilles tendinitis, they do not reverse the damage done to the tendon. They also can take months to provide real results, at which point any increase in physical activity will ruin all progress. The same goes for other conventional medical treatments like cortisone injections, which only alleviate pain temporarily. In fact, research shows that the use of steroid injections like cortisone are inefficient and lead to additional health risks like cartilage and tissue damage.

Prolotherapy: The Solution That Delivers Real Results

Prolotherapy offers a unique and exciting way to treat Achilles tendinitis because it actually stimulates the growth of healthy and strong tissue. Want to learn more about prolotherapy and its many benefits to your health? If you’re looking for a beauty treatment that does more than just temporarily enhance the surface of your skin, look no further than microneedling with platelet rich plasma (PRP). Microneedling itself is a powerful treatment that triggers the skin into accelerated healing, but adding PRP into the equation brings the treatment’s healing potential to an entirely new level. It’s really no wonder that microneedling with PRP was picked yet again as the top beauty treatment, even over other popular options like Botox, by NewBeauty.

Microneedling is considered one of the best-kept secrets in the beauty industry because it’s more affordable than lasers, requires very little- if any- recovery time, and is incredibly safe. When you pair microneedling with the regenerative powers of PRP, there’s really no comparison to the healing and revitalization that the treatment can generate over the span of a few sessions.

Microneedling Uses Tiny, Controlled Injuries

With the word “needle” right in the name, many patients might be tempted to steer clear of a treatment that involves many tiny needles rolled across the face. However, the truth is that microneedling is a surprisingly comfortable and simple procedure. The tiny needles create controlled injuries at various depths in the skin. This stimulates the body’s natural reaction to produce collagen, growth factors, and cytokines to fill and heal the wounds. Though you can’t even feel the injuries that microneedling creates, those injuries immediately initiate collagen and elastin synthesis that makes it possible for the skin tissue to regenerate and heal. Everything from skin tone and texture to wrinkles and pitted acne scars can be treated with microneedling!

PRP Adds Super Power to Microneedling

Microneedling alone is a powerful treatment, but adding PRP makes it possible to achieve even more dramatic and long-lasting results. Platelet rich plasma is composed of nothing but your own blood’s concentrated platelets with a small amount of plasma. Since platelets are very rich in growth factors that help to stimulate new cell and collagen growth, they can be injected into virtually any site of injury to trigger healing that normally wouldn’t occur.  The PRP can be applied topically after microneedling or injected directly into a pitted acne scar or other problem to accelerate healing quickly and efficiently.

Are you ready to take advantage of this top rated treatment to improve and rejuvenate your own skin? NuMoon Regenerative Medicine serves Jacksonville and Northeast Florida with premier PRP aesthetic services. Call (904) 580-6777 to make your first microneedling appointment today!

As if pimples weren’t frustrating enough, they often leave scars that remain as unwanted reminders of your acne. If you have scars on your face, you have probably tried many different treatments that promise to heal your skin but never deliver lasting results. The Vampire Scar Treatment® offered by Dr. Arcila Moon at NuMoon Regenerative Medicine offers what no other treatment can: to regenerate the skin from the inside out in order to minimize and reverse scar damage.

What Is the Vampire Scar Treatment®?

The Vampire Scar Treatment® obtains its power from platelet-rich plasma (PRP). PRP is blood drawn from your own body that is spun through a centrifuge to become highly concentrated with platelets. Platelets are rich in growth factors that activate and accelerate tissue repair and regeneration. This means that when PRP is injected into a specific area of damaged skin, it jump starts the healing process and makes it possible to repair scar tissue.

It only takes about 20 minutes for Dr. Moon to draw your blood and use an FDA-approved kit to produce PRP.  Your scars will undergo microneedling and topical PRP application during the Vampire Scar Treatment®. Microneedling is an innovative process that creates tiny micro-injuries to the dermis and epidermis. These injuries trigger the skin’s natural healing response and stimulate increased collagen production to further overcome skin damage. PRP is then applied over the micro-injuries to ensure it can be absorbed deep into the skin. As the powers of microneedling and PRP work together, scar tissue gradually becomes replaced with healthy, undamaged tissue.

If your acne scars are very pitted and severe, Dr. Moon might also recommend that the area be treated with injections of PRP around and under the scar tissue. It’s even possible to combine PRP with a dermal filler like Restylane or Juvederm to raise the scar tissue up to become even with the surrounding skin. This process delivers instant results while the PRP continues to work to regenerate healthier skin that replaces and heals the scar tissue.

Healing Your Acne Scars Doesn’t Have to Be Difficult

According to a 2016 report published in The Dermatologist , “Acne scarring historically has been a difficult entity to treat for both the physician and patient, as typically multiple expensive sessions are required with less than optimal outcomes.” The Vampire Scar Treatment®  changes all of that by providing a treatment that creates natural and long-lasting healing in the skin that is powerful enough to overcome deep acne scars.

NuMoon Regenerative Medicine is the very best place in the Jacksonville, Florida area to receive your Vampire Scar Treatment® . Dr. Moon is a highly trained professional who specializes in using PRP to deliver natural and long-lasting results for all of her patients. Call (904) 580-6777 to make your appointment today.
