What is Platelet Rich Plasma/PRP?
Platelet-Rich-Plasma, or PRP is blood that is concentrated with platelets. These platelets contain significant amounts of growth factors that are important in activating and accelerating tissue repair and regeneration. PRP has been used to promote tissue healing in bone, tendon, ligaments, injured muscles, skin by promoting development of new blood vessels and stimulating the healing process. For example, when you cut yourself or skin your knee or elbow, platelets are activated to signal your body to start the healing process and in no time new skin is forming and that injury is now healed. Essentially PRP is jump starting the healing cascade in areas of your body that may need it by stimulating growth factors for repair. For more information about PRP –> Click here.
What is the Vampire Facelift ® ?
The Vampire Facelift® is a nonsurgical cosmetic procedure used to enhance volume in the face via injecting a combination of hyaluronic acid (like Restylane or Juvaderm) and platelet-rich fibrin matrix (PRFM), which is a thicker form of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to attain healthy, youthful, and rejuvenated skin, without the downtime. Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP) and it’s healing properties are used to harness your own body’s healing and regenerative properties. The Vampire Facelift® is an outpatient procedure, and results can be experienced on the same day, with continual benefit of skin regeneration lasting for months—even over a year—after the procedure.
The Vampire Facelift ® has become popular with many celebrities and now is becoming more and more common among everyday people due to wanting to avoid surgery yet still obtain a youthful and healthy look.
How does the Vampire Facelift ® work?
A combination of hyaluronic acid (like Restylane or Juvederm) is injected first to help improve the loss of volume and then PRFM (platelet-rich fibrin matrix) is injected to help promote growth factors in the skin leading to cellular and tissue repair and then skin rejuvenation.
The face ages in two ways
- There is loss of volume from bone, muscle, fat, and skin causing a hollowness and loss of volume under the eyes and cheeks. The skin no longer has a rosy look but rather appears gray and dull.
- The loss of elasticity and support of the skin causing drooping upper eyelids, lower eyelids, cheeks , jowls and sagging neck skin.
What is the difference between a Vampire Facelift ® and Vampire Facial ® ?
The Vampire Facelift® and the Vampire Facial® are not the same treatments. The Vampire Facial ® does not use any fillers. The Vampire Facelift ® is most appropriate for those who have lost volume in their face and need to have the face subtly reshaped. The purpose of the Vampire Facial® is not to add volume to the face but rather to enhance the benefits of micro-needling to improve the texture of the skin, with a device such as the Rejuvapen, by applying PRP (platelet-rich plasma) during and after the micro needling process. This allows the PRP to be absorbed topically over the whole face (not injected) allowing for improvement of skin elasticity, texture and improvement of scars and wrinkles. The combination of micro-needling with application of PRP (platelet-rich plasma) results in the stimulation of collagen and improvement of the skin texture.
How is the Vampire Facelift ® performed?
After numbing cream is applied to the face, the platelet-rich fibrin matrix is placed after a numbing cream has been applied, resulting in a near painless application. Platelet-rich fibrin matrix contains your body’s own concentrated growth factors to rejuvenate the face in several ways:
- Enhances the formation of new blood vessels (also called “neovascularization”) and increases the blood flow to the skin, resulting in healthier, better quality skin.
- Enhances new cell formation for skin renewal.
- Helps produce new collagen which is the major component of facial skin that decreases as we age.
- Repair of skin by activating multi-potent stem cells by tricking the body into thinking there is an acute injury. This combination of growth factors and stem cells helps generate new fatty tissue which results in the generation of new, younger-skin.
When will I start to notice a difference? What can I expect from The Vampire Facelift ®?
Regenerative Medicine is not a quick result rather over the course of a few weeks you will start to internally have repair resulting in a more youthful appearance over that time. You may initially have some light swelling that subsides over a few days but as the weeks pass, the growth factors work to increase production of collagen, elastic fibers and hyaluronic acid in the dermis. Blood supply also improves during this time.
It can take about six weeks before we see the initial results, and we can repeat the process then if needed. The procedure can be repeated a few times and often in the first year, some patients prefer to perform 4-6 treatments to see maximum benefits. Once we see the maximum results, we can maintain treatments every 6-12 months.
Who is a good candidate for the Vampire Facelift ®?
The Vampire Facelift® is NOT for everyone. People with more advanced signs of aging may benefit more from surgical treatment and/or Botox applications.
People with less visible signs of aging may benefit from using less extensive non-surgical procedures like hyaluronic acid fillers and platelet-rich plasma alone.
How long will the effects last?
Most agree that the positive effects will last at least a year. The positive effects will likely last longer with better general skin care (e.g. no smoking, no tanning, good diet). Also regular health maintenance helps prolong results however no procedure is a one-time event, just like getting your hair cut.
We can figuratively turn back the clock, but we cannot stop the clock. If you like the results, periodic ongoing maintenance will be required to restore the youthful effects.
How soon after the Vampire Facelift® can I go back to work?
There is no downtime to this procedure and is has been called a “lunchtime lift” because recovery is typically minimal. You can expect some redness and minimal bruising. There are no driving or activity restrictions except avoid excessive sun exposure.
